Values in Action Newsletter, Number 1 August 2009

  • The Values in Action Schools Project (VASP) is the third round of values education grants projects in schools funded by the Australian Government and managed by Curriculum Corporation. Fifteen clusters of schools from across Australia are undertaking values projects using an action research model.
  • Have you discovered your school’s copies of the latest resources from the Values Education program? If you haven’t, then it’s time to enjoy some new, innovative and exciting resources to enliven the second half of 2009!
  • Read the most recent Values Education reports on the Values Education website.
  • In addition to the VASP and the recently published resources for schools, the Australian Government’s impetus in the area of Values Education has seen a number of important national initiatives emerge.
  • The 2009 National Values Education Conference, Values in Action: Shaping Positive Futures, attracted approximately 250 national and international participants, and reinforced Australia’s role as a world leader in the field of values education.
  • In August 2008, the Australian Government published a report detailing the outcomes and learning from the second round of the Values Education Good Practice Schools Projects (VEGPSP) implemented in Australian schools in 2007–2008.
  • Values Education Contact Officers provide a link between national values education initiatives and state and territory partnerships, and provide a valuable resource for schools to access local values education information relevant to their school communities.

 

Values in Action Newsletter, Number 2 10 January 2010

  • The Values in Action Schools Project (VASP) is drawing to an end. Clusters have formally concluded their VASP project work and the data will be incorporated into a final report in early 2010.
  • The Most Significant Change (MSC) technique was one of the research tools used to include the whole school community in the VASP. The powerful story telling technique enabled students, parents and teachers to relate why their involvement in VASP was significant to them and their community.
  • The VASP Evaluation Summit brought the VASP community together in Melbourne to share and discuss the MSC stories that best demonstrated the most significant change to school communities resulting from VASP.
  • The Values Education Project Advisory Committee (VEPAC), with representation from jurisdictions, educational sectors and organisations representing parents, teachers and the higher education sector, has supported and informed the decisions and processes of the VASP.
  • The voices and experiences of the VASP Clusters are highlighted by snapshots of cluster experiences from a number of VASP Coordinators. Achievements of the Project are also highlighted by some of the University Advisors who have supported the VASP.
  • Two cluster leaders of Values Education School grants projects have won leadership and innovation awards as a result of their outstanding work.
  • Funded by the Australian Government, four new Values Education resources focusing on values education in global and intercultural contexts, were released in November 2009,.
  • Drawing on current national and international research, and in particular, the work of the schools clusters in the Values Education Good Practices Schools Project Stages 1 and 2, Values Education, Quality Teaching and Service-Learning – A troika for Effective Teaching and Teaching Education, explores the effects of values education, quality teaching and service learning on student learning.
