Building Values Across the Whole School: Teaching and Learning Units: Secondary
Building Values Across the Whole School forms part of the Values for Australian Schooling resource series to support schools in implementing the National Framework for Values Education in Australian Schools. The resource consists of two components: primary and secondary Teaching and Learning Units and a Professional Learning Program.
A copy of Building Values Across the Whole School was delivered to Principals at all Australian schools in early May 2009.
Additional copies may also be downloaded by schools from this website. Due to copyright obligations the resource has been published as PDF files on this website through a special restricted access facility from The Learning Federation.
To access Building Values across the Whole School read the following instructions. It is strongly suggested that schools download the resources to their school intranet so that the materials only have to be downloaded once.

Teaching and Learning Units
Building Values Across the Whole School: Teaching and Learning Units is designed to assist schools and teachers to integrate values within key learning areas of the school curriculum.
The Teaching and Learning Units aim to:
- assist schools to provide values in a planned, explicit and systematic way
- be inclusive of the whole school community and school life
- focus on developing student responsibility in local, national and global contexts
- support quality teaching congruent with curriculum outcomes
- establish safe and supportive teaching and learning environments.
The Teaching and Learning Units are based on the fundamental assumptions that every classroom is already a values-rich environment, that every teacher is a values educator, and every classroom is an opportunity for values teaching and learning.
There are sixteen units for primary years comprising eight units each for Early years and Middle childhood, and sixteen units for secondary years with eight units each for Early adolescence and Later adolescence. Utilising key principles of values education good practice, the units deliver a sequence of teaching and learning activities and model how values concepts, understandings and practices can be integrated within curriculum contexts. The units include photocopiable student worksheets, lists of resources and advice on approaches to assessment.
Professional Learning Programme
Building Values Across the Whole School: Professional Learning Program promotes teacher learning about values education and supports teachers as they impart values within all areas of the curriculum. Working from the premise that every teacher is a values educator, the Professional Learning Program aims to develop each teacher as an effective and confident values educator in the classroom. The focus is on integrating values education within teaching and learning through everyday curriculum, pedagogy and classroom interactions.
The Professional Learning Program is designed to help school-based facilitators deliver professional learning in local school settings that will support:
- teacher knowledge and understanding of values education
- teacher knowledge and understanding of how to integrate values education in curriculum and classroom practice
- opportunities to explore the implementation of values education
The program consists of three modules, photocopiable resource sheets and PowerPoint® slides.
